How can I find out about the country that I wish to move to?
You can look on the government websites
Check out the British government website with all the latest travel and country advice at www.fco.gov.uk.
Will I need to get my own visa and documents sorted before traveling to any country to start my new job?
A good school will always help you obtain visas and documents that you will need to work within that country. In some cases this will need to be completed before you travel to the country but within the EU most of the documents can be arranged when you arrive. Ask the school head teacher or recruitment officer if there is someone within the school who can help you with the process and try to contact them before you travel to your new country. A good international school will have a member of staff who will be responsible with helping new employees when relocating to a new country.
Can I teach abroad straight after finishing my degree?
Nearly all international schools will expect their teachers to have at least one years teaching experience and in most cases they will ask for at least two. But if you are in your final year of your course then send us your email address and information and we will keep in contact with you throughout your initial teaching year and with prospective teaching jobs abroad. Also remember there are some international schools that will accept teachers straight after their degree. Send us your email address and we will get in touch with you about what you are looking for and how we can help you. register@ucanta.com
What type of interview should I expect?
The interview process could take place within a hotel or agency within the UK or at the actual school itself. The interviews can vary from being very similar to a UK interview while others will be more of an informal chat. Some schools choose to conduct telephone interviews, when this is the case be sure to do your own research in the school before you accept the position.
You should always prepare to talk about yourself, your experiences, your cv information, bring your own portfolio and dress to impress.
(You may get reimbursed for interview costs depending on the school but ask before if you are not sure)
What curriculum will be taught in British Schools abroad?
The main curriculums followed by British international schools are the UK National Curriculum or the IB Curriculum. International schools do have the flexibility to vary and adapt the curriculum’s to their own needs and demands.
Will I be able to earn the same as I do now in England?
This will depend entirely on where you chose to work. The wages can vary a great deal from country to country. Generally in Europe you will find that the wages in the British schools are lower than in the UK but you can find other jobs around the world that pay more than the UK average wage.
Will I be provided with accommodation at my new school?
This can vary upon the school that you select to work in. There are a number of schools that will provide you with accommodation as part of the recruitment package, either for a fixed period of time or for the full length of your contract; these can vary from a flat/room within the school grounds, a shared flat or your own flat/house outside of the school grounds.
If the school is not offering accommodation then you should expect them to help you find somewhere to live either before you move to the country or when you arrive there.
Do I always receive a relocation allowance?
This can again depend on the different schools that you work for. The majority of schools outside of Europe will offer a return flight within the first year and funding to assist with relocating and transport costs at the start of your contract.
Schools within Europe generally offer funds for transport and initial relocation in a new country.
All good schools will offer a relocation package.
What class sizes should I expect?
Class sizes in international schools are generally smaller than within the UK. The majority of schools are privately run either by an individual, company or a non-profit governing body therefore it is in their interest to keep class numbers at a level to both please the parents and gain maximum income. An average would be 20-25 pupils per class.
